If you want to import a Range Rover from the UK to Kenya, you are buying from the best market in the world for these cars. The UK is Land Rover's home. It has thousands of right-hand-drive Range Rovers with full dealer history at any time. As a result, Kenyan buyers get more choice, better specs and more transparency than any local yard can offer.
However, a UK import has rules and risks. You must meet the KEBS 8-year rule, check for rust, verify history, pay KRA duty and clear the car at Mombasa. This guide explains every step. Furthermore, it shows how Elisa Motors handles the full process with one fixed price in Kenya shillings.

The landed cost has five parts. First, the UK purchase price. Second, freight and marine insurance to Mombasa. Third, KRA taxes based on the CRSP value. Fourth, port, shipping line and clearing charges. Finally, NTSA registration and plates. Read our KRA duty guide for how taxes are worked out.
CIF, FOB and "duty paid": what the terms mean
FOB (Free On Board) is the price of the car loaded at the UK port. CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) adds shipping and insurance to Mombasa. Many UK exporters quote "CIF Mombasa" prices online.
However, CIF does not include KRA duty, port charges, clearing or registration. Consequently, a CIF price can look far cheaper than the true landed cost. Always compare duty-paid, registered prices. That is the figure we quote.
Step 1: Choose the right Range Rover
Start with how you will use the car. City drivers may prefer the Evoque or Velar. Families who travel upcountry often prefer the Range Rover Sport. Meanwhile, executives choose the full-size Range Rover.
Then choose the engine. Diesels suit long trips. Petrols suit short town drives. Plug-in hybrids suit owners with home charging. Our model guides compare each in detail: Sport, Vogue, Velar and Evoque.
Step 2: Check the age rule
KEBS allows used cars less than eight years old from the year of first registration. In 2026, that means cars first registered in 2019 or later. Check the V5C logbook for the first registration date before paying anything.
Be careful with cars built late in one year and registered early in the next. KRA and KEBS can look at both dates. Read our 8-year rule guide for detail.
Step 3: Verify history and mileage
The UK makes history checks easy. MOT records show the mileage at every annual test from year three. A history check reveals outstanding finance, theft markers and insurance write-offs. Moreover, dealer service records show whether maintenance was done on time.
Reject cars with mileage gaps, missing services or write-off categories. Those cars are cheaper for a reason. Read our UK export documents guide for the paperwork involved.
Step 4: Check for rust and UK road damage
UK roads are salted in winter. Salt attacks brake lines, subframes and suspension parts. Range Rovers have aluminium bodies, which resist rust, but steel components underneath can still corrode.
Therefore, inspect the underside carefully. Look at the brake pipes, suspension arms, exhaust and subframe mounts. Light surface rust is normal. Deep corrosion is a reason to walk away.
Step 5: Inspection and shipping
Every car must pass the KEBS-appointed roadworthiness inspection in the UK before shipping. The inspector checks safety items, age and condition. After that, the car goes to the port.
Most Range Rovers ship by roll-on/roll-off from ports such as Southampton or Bristol. Transit to Mombasa takes about five to seven weeks. Container shipping adds protection for high-value cars. Read our RoRo vs container guide to compare.
Step 6: Clearing at Mombasa
When the ship berths at Kilindini Harbour, the clearing process begins. Your agent lodges the customs entry, KRA assesses duty, you pay and the car is verified. Subsequently, the port releases it.
Delays cost money through storage charges. Therefore, prepare documents early. Read our Mombasa port clearing guide for each step.
Step 7: Registration and delivery
After clearing, the car is registered with NTSA and receives Kenyan plates and a logbook. Then it travels to your town by car carrier or is collected in Mombasa. Read our NTSA registration guide and our Mombasa to Nairobi transport guide.
Ex-UK vs ex-Japan Range Rover
UK cars offer more choice, higher specs and verifiable history. In contrast, Japanese cars often have lower mileage and spotless interiors, but supply is small. Japanese cars may also need English conversion of navigation and radio.
For most Kenyan buyers, the UK is the better source for Range Rovers. However, if a low-mileage Japanese unit appears at the right price, it can be excellent. Read our UK vs Japan imports guide for a full comparison.
Our services: Range Rover imports from the UK
Elisa Motors runs the whole UK import for you. Here is what we do for buyers in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret and beyond.
1. UK dealer and auction sourcing
We search approved-used dealers, independent specialists and trade auctions across the UK. You give us your model, engine, year, colour and budget. Then we shortlist real cars that match.
Already found one? Send us the link and we will check it.
2. History, MOT and mileage verification
We run full history checks and review MOT and service records. Cars with gaps, write-offs or outstanding finance are rejected. As a result, you only see cars worth buying.
We share every report with you before purchase.
3. Rust and mechanical inspection
We inspect the underbody, air suspension, engine and electronics. In addition, we scan for stored fault codes. Then the car passes the KEBS-appointed inspection.
You receive photos and video and approve the car before we buy.
4. VAT and export paperwork
Some UK dealer cars are "VAT qualifying". When exported correctly, the VAT may be removed or refunded, which lowers the price. We handle the export paperwork with the dealer.
We also prepare the V5C, export certificate, invoice and bill of lading.
5. Shipping and marine insurance
We book RoRo or container space from UK ports to Mombasa. Every car carries marine insurance. Moreover, we track the vessel and update you on WhatsApp.
High-value cars can ship in containers for extra protection.
6. Clearing, registration and delivery
Our clearing team handles KRA, KPA and verification at Mombasa. We then register the car with NTSA and fit plates. Finally, we deliver it to your door.
We deliver to Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Naivasha, Eldoret, Kisumu, Nyeri, Nanyuki, Meru, Mombasa, Nyali, Diani and Malindi.
7. One all-inclusive price
You receive one figure in Kenya shillings covering everything. No surprise top-ups at the port. Furthermore, payment terms are agreed in writing before we buy.
That protects you from the most common UK import pitfalls. Read our guide to avoiding car import scams.
Importing other Land Rovers from the UK
The same process applies to the Land Rover Defender, which lands from about KES 10.5M, and the Discovery 5, from about KES 7.5M. In fact, the UK is the best source for every Land Rover model.
Read our Defender price guide and Discovery price guide for details.
Timeline: from order to keys
A typical UK Range Rover import takes seven to ten weeks. Sourcing and checks take one to two weeks. Inspection and delivery to the UK port take about a week. Shipping takes five to seven weeks. Clearing and registration take about one more week.
We update you on WhatsApp at every stage, so you always know where your car is.
Common mistakes when importing a Range Rover from the UK
First, buying on CIF price alone. Duty and clearing add a large amount. Second, ignoring the registration date. A car that misses the 8-year rule cannot be cleared. Third, skipping the underbody inspection on a UK car.
Fourth, paying deposits to unverified sellers. Scam sites copy real dealer listings. Finally, choosing a huge-wheel, low-profile spec that suffers on Kenyan roads. Each mistake is avoidable with the right checks.
Which UK Range Rover is the best value?
For most Kenyan buyers, a 2019 to 2021 Range Rover Sport diesel offers the best balance of price, comfort and capability. It has a large UK supply, so prices are competitive. Moreover, it resells well in Nairobi.
The Velar D200 is the best value for style-focused buyers. Meanwhile, the Evoque D180 is the cheapest way into the brand. At the top end, an L405 Vogue SDV8 gives flagship luxury at a fraction of the new L460 price.
Avoid the rarest specs unless you really want them. Unusual colours and extreme performance versions take longer to source and longer to sell. In contrast, popular specs in white, black or grey are easy to buy and easy to resell.
Best time to buy in the UK
The UK changes registration plates every March and September. Around those months, dealers receive many part-exchange cars. As a result, choice increases and prices can soften.
Exchange rates matter too. A stronger shilling against the pound lowers the landed price. We watch both and advise you when the timing looks good.
Questions to ask a UK seller
Ask how many owners the car has had and how many keys come with it. Ask for the full service history, including the last major service. Moreover, ask whether any recalls or software campaigns are outstanding.
Ask about tyres, brakes and any warning lights. Finally, ask for photos of the underside. A genuine seller will answer clearly. A vague seller is a warning sign.
Range Rover Sport: the most popular UK import
Here is how each Range Rover Sport version we import compares. All of them seat 5, and you can import them from UK or Japan.
Range Rover Sport HSE 3.0 SDV6. This version uses a 3.0-litre diesel engine with 306 hp, a 8-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. In addition, it returns about 13 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 9M – 11M.
Range Rover Sport HSE Dynamic P400. This version uses a 3.0-litre petrol engine with 400 hp, a 8-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Moreover, it returns about 10 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 10M – 12M.
Range Rover Sport Autobiography D350 (L461). This version uses a 3.0-litre diesel engine with 350 hp, a 8-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. As a result, it returns about 12 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 17M – 21M.
Every Range Rover Sport we import includes these key features: terrain Response 2, air suspension, wade depth 850 mm, luxury interior, diesel and petrol & PHEV.
Similarly, our Vogue guide lists every full-size Range Rover version with its landed price.
In addition, remember that options change the price. For example, a panoramic roof or upgraded audio adds value. However, very large wheels add cost without adding comfort. Therefore, we help you focus on options that matter in Kenya.
Running costs after import
Once your Range Rover lands, plan a first service, a tracker and insurance. Moreover, choose a Land Rover specialist for ongoing care. Read our Range Rover maintenance guide for detail.
