How to Buy Cars from Japanese Auctions from Kenya: Bidding, Deposits, Fees and Choosing Between Auction and Exporter Stock

A practical guide to buying at Japanese car auctions from Nairobi: how auctions work, how to bid, deposits and refunds, fees, the pros and cons versus exporter stock, and how we help.

buy cars from Japanese auctions from Kenya: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado imported by Elisa Motors

If you want the best choice and the fairest prices, you need to know how to buy cars from Japanese auctions from Kenya. Japanese dealer auctions sell a huge number of used cars every week. Moreover, every car comes with an independent inspection sheet. As a result, auctions are where most good export cars begin their journey to Mombasa.

However, private buyers cannot bid directly at most Japanese auctions. You need a licensed member, an exporter or an import agent. Therefore, understanding how the system works helps you choose the right partner and avoid costly mistakes.

This guide explains how the auctions work, how bidding happens, deposits and refunds, fees and how auction cars compare with exporter stock. Furthermore, it shows how Elisa Motors bids for you from Nairobi.

Want us to bid for you? Tell us the car, grade and budget. Use the order form, call +254 725 310 112 or WhatsApp +254 725 310 112.

How Japanese car auctions work

Japan's auction groups, such as USS, TAA, JU, CAA, HAA and many others, run sites across the country. Dealers who are members bid in person or online. Sales are fast: a car may sell in under a minute.

Before the sale, inspectors grade each car and publish the auction sheet. Member dealers and exporters see photos and sheets online. Consequently, buyers anywhere can review cars before bidding, as long as they work through a member.

Who can bid?

Only registered members can bid. Most are Japanese dealers and exporters. Overseas buyers access auctions through exporters or agents who hold memberships. The agent places bids on your behalf, within the limit you set.

Step by step: buying at auction from Nairobi

1. Set your criteria

Choose the model, year range, grade, mileage, colour and budget. Remember the 8-year rule: in 2026, the car must be first registered in 2019 or later.

2. Review auction listings

Your agent searches upcoming auctions and sends matching cars with sheets and photos. Read our auction sheet guide to understand them.

3. Set your maximum bid

Your agent estimates the likely winning price and the full landed cost. Then you set a maximum. The agent never bids above it.

4. Win or try again

If you win, you pay for the car. If not, the agent keeps searching. Many buyers win within one or two weeks, because auctions run daily.

5. Inspection, shipping and clearing

The car is inspected, shipped to Mombasa, cleared and registered. Read our Japan import guide.

Deposits and refunds

Many agents ask for a refundable deposit before bidding. This shows you are a serious buyer. If you do not win any car, the deposit should be refunded or kept for future bids, depending on the terms. Therefore, always read the deposit terms in writing.

Be careful with unverified sellers who demand large deposits. Read our car import scams guide.

Fees involved

Auction purchases include the winning bid, the auction fee, the agent's or exporter's fee, inland transport to the port, export handling and inspection. Then come shipping, insurance, KRA taxes, clearing and registration.

A good agent shows all of these in one landed price. In contrast, some sellers quote only the bid or FOB price, which looks cheap but hides the rest.

Auction cars vs exporter stock

Large exporters buy cars at auction and resell them from their own stock, often through websites. Stock cars are convenient: you see a fixed price and buy instantly. However, the exporter has already added a margin. Moreover, the choice is limited to what they hold.

Buying at auction through an agent gives far more choice and often a lower price. However, it requires patience, because you may need several bids. Many Kenyan buyers prefer auction buying for popular models like the Prado, Harrier and Fielder.

Tips for winning at auction

First, be flexible on colour. White and pearl cars attract the most bids, while silver or grey can sell for less. Second, consider grade 4 instead of 4.5. Third, bid on several cars rather than waiting for one perfect unit.

Moreover, avoid end-of-year rushes when many buyers compete. Finally, set a realistic maximum based on recent results. Your agent can show past winning prices for similar cars.

Paying safely

Pay only into verified company accounts after written terms are agreed. Avoid sending money to personal accounts or unknown brokers. Moreover, keep every receipt and invoice. Read our scams guide for warning signs.

How long does an auction import take?

Winning a car usually takes one to two weeks. Inspection and port delivery take about a week. Shipping to Mombasa takes four to six weeks. Clearing and registration take about one week. Therefore, most auction imports take six to nine weeks in total.

Auction calendar and timing

Japanese auctions run almost every weekday at different sites. As a result, there is always stock. However, supply and prices change through the year. Prices often rise when many export markets compete for the same models. Meanwhile, prices can soften when Japanese demand falls.

For Kenyan buyers, timing also depends on the 8-year rule. Cars first registered in 2019 must arrive and clear in 2026. Therefore, buying such cars late in the year carries risk. We plan timing so your car arrives well within the window.

Understanding auction results

Agents can show past results for similar cars: grade, mileage and winning price. This data helps you set a realistic maximum bid. For example, if similar Harriers sold for a certain price last week, a much lower bid will probably lose.

Similarly, results show which colours and grades sell for more. As a result, you can choose where to compromise.

What happens if a car has hidden problems?

Major auctions have claim procedures for serious undisclosed problems found shortly after sale, such as mileage discrepancies or major mechanical faults. However, the claim window is short and handled by the member dealer. Therefore, buy through an agent who checks cars promptly after purchase.

Auction buying for businesses

Businesses importing several vehicles, such as Probox vans or Hiace buses, benefit greatly from auctions. Many similar units appear each week. Moreover, buying in batches can reduce shipping costs. Read our commercial vehicle import guide and car import business guide.

Common auction buying mistakes

First, setting an unrealistic maximum bid and losing week after week. Second, ignoring auction sheet comments. Third, forgetting to include all costs when setting a budget. Fourth, paying deposits to unverified brokers. Finally, buying a car that will miss the 8-year window on arrival. Read our 8-year rule guide.

Auction vs buying locally in Kenya

Local yards in Nairobi and Mombasa sell many ex-Japan cars. They are convenient, and you can see the car before buying. However, prices include the yard's margin. Moreover, some local cars have unverified mileage. In contrast, auction buying gives verified sheets and often lower prices, but requires waiting. Read our mileage check guide.

Auction favourites with landed prices

These two models appear at auction every week and suit many Kenyan buyers. Therefore, they are good examples of how auction buying works in practice.

Toyota Harrier Hybrid Z 2.5 E-Four. This version uses a 2.5-litre hybrid engine with 218 hp, a e-cvt automatic gearbox and AWD. As a result, it returns about 21 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 5.6M – 6.3M.

Nissan X-Trail specifications by version

Here is how each Nissan X-Trail version we import compares. All of them seat 7, and you can import them from Japan.

Nissan X-Trail 20X 2.0. This version uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 147 hp, a cvt automatic gearbox and two-wheel drive. In addition, it returns about 15 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 2.4M – 2.8M.

Nissan X-Trail 20Xi 2.0 4WD 7-Seater. This version uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 147 hp, a cvt automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Moreover, it returns about 14 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 2.7M – 3.1M.

Nissan X-Trail Hybrid 20X 4WD. This version uses a 2.0-litre hybrid engine with 176 hp, a cvt automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. As a result, it returns about 20 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 2.9M – 3.3M.

Every Nissan X-Trail we import includes these key features: optional 7 seats, intelligent 4x4, proPILOT (2017+), power tailgate and hybrid option.

For example, if you want a Harrier Premium in pearl white with under 50,000 km, we may find several each week. However, competition for that spec is strong. In contrast, a grey or silver car with similar mileage often sells for less. As a result, small compromises can save real money. Similarly, flexibility on year within the 8-year window widens your options. Read our Harrier price guide for more detail.

Questions to ask any auction agent

Before you work with any agent or exporter, ask a few clear questions first. Do they verify auction sheets by chassis number? Are deposits refundable, and when? Does the quote include every cost to registration? Moreover, how will they update you during shipping and clearing? A trustworthy agent answers in writing. In contrast, vague answers are a warning sign. Finally, ask for references from recent Kenyan buyers, ideally people who imported the same type of car you want. A good agent will happily connect you, and those conversations often reveal more than any website or advert ever could.
