Most cars on Kenyan roads started life in Japan. That is no accident. When you import cars from Japan to Kenya, you get right-hand-drive vehicles, low mileage, honest auction grading and fair prices. As a result, Japan remains the first choice for buyers in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret.
However, importing from Japan has its own rules. You need to read auction sheets, pass the KEBS-appointed inspection, meet the 8-year rule, pay KRA duty and clear the car at Mombasa. This guide explains each step clearly. Furthermore, it shows how Elisa Motors handles the full process with one fixed price.
Why Japanese cars dominate Kenyan roads
First, Japan drives on the left, so every car is right-hand drive. Second, Japanese owners drive little and service on time. Third, strict Japanese road-tax and inspection rules push owners to sell cars young. Consequently, the export market is full of clean, low-mileage units.
Spare parts for Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Honda, Subaru and Mitsubishi are also easy to find in Kenya. For instance, Kirinyaga Road in Nairobi stocks parts for almost every Japanese model. Browse our import from Japan page for every model we source.

The 8-year rule for Japanese imports
KEBS only allows used cars less than eight years old from the year of first registration. In 2026, the cut-off is 2019. Therefore, cars first registered in 2019 or later qualify. Older cars are refused at the port, and the costs fall on the importer.
Japanese export certificates show the first registration date clearly. We check it before bidding. In addition, we plan timing so a car bought late in the year does not miss the window on arrival.
How Japanese car auctions work
Most export cars are sold at large dealer auctions across Japan. Each car is inspected and given an auction sheet. That sheet is the most useful document you will ever read about a used car.
How to read a Japanese auction sheet
The overall grade runs from about 3 to 6, or S for nearly new. A grade 4 or 4.5 car is clean and well kept. Grade 3.5 cars show more wear. Meanwhile, "R" or "RA" means the car has had repairs to its structure.
The interior grade runs from A (excellent) to E. Finally, a body map marks scratches (A), dents (U), waves (W) and rust (S or C). For example, "A1" is a tiny scratch. We translate every sheet into plain English for you.
Should you buy a grade R car?
Repaired cars can be imported if they pass inspection. However, we rarely recommend them. They can hide weak spots and usually sell for less in Kenya. For most buyers, grade 4 and above is the safe choice.
Our services: Japan car imports across Kenya
Elisa Motors runs the whole import for you. Here is what we do for buyers in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret and every county.
1. Japan auction bidding for Nairobi buyers
We bid at major Japanese auctions through trusted partners. You tell us the model, grade, mileage, colour and budget. Then we shortlist real cars every week.
We never bid above your limit. Moreover, we explain each car's sheet before you decide. As a result, you buy with the same information as a Japanese dealer.
2. Auction sheet verification and mileage checks
Odometer tampering is a known risk in the used car trade. Therefore, we verify each car's original auction record and export certificate. Any mismatch is a red flag, and we walk away.
This check matters even for locally sold "ex-Japan" cars. In fact, many Kenyan buyers ask us to verify a car they found elsewhere. We are happy to help.
3. QISJ inspection and radiation checks
Every car must pass the KEBS-appointed pre-shipment inspection in Japan. At the time of writing, that agent is QISJ. The inspection covers roadworthiness, age and radiation levels.
We book the inspection and fix any minor issues first. Consequently, your car passes on the first attempt. If a car fails, we do not ship it.
4. RoRo and container shipping from Japan to Mombasa
Most cars ship roll-on/roll-off from Yokohama, Nagoya, Kobe or Osaka. Transit to Mombasa takes about four to six weeks. RoRo is the cheapest option for most cars.
Container shipping costs more but adds protection. Similarly, it can work well for small cars shared in one container. We quote both and track the vessel for you.
5. KRA duty calculation and all-inclusive quotes
We calculate import duty, excise duty, 16% VAT, the IDF and the RDL from KRA's CRSP schedule. Then we add freight, insurance, port fees, clearing and registration. You see one price in KES.
Hybrids and smaller engines often attract lower excise duty. For instance, a Toyota Aqua hybrid lands from just KES 1.3M. We can compare petrol and hybrid versions for you.
6. Mombasa port clearing, registration and English conversion
Our team handles customs entry, KRA payment and KPA release at Kilindini Harbour. Subsequently, we register the car with NTSA, fit plates and process your logbook.
Japanese cars often have Japanese-language radios and navigation. Therefore, we can fit an English unit or update the software before delivery. Hybrid system checks are also available.
7. Delivery to Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret and beyond
We deliver by car carrier to Nairobi, Kiambu, Ruiru, Thika, Machakos and Kitengela. We also deliver to Nakuru, Naivasha, Eldoret, Kitale, Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma and Kericho.
In central Kenya, we serve Nyeri, Nanyuki, Meru, Embu and Murang'a. On the coast, we serve Mombasa, Nyali, Kilifi, Malindi and Diani. Alternatively, collect at the port in Mombasa.
How much does it cost to import a car from Japan?
Your landed cost has five parts. First, the FOB price, which is the car's price at the Japanese port. Second, freight and marine insurance to Mombasa. Together, these give the CIF price.
Third, KRA taxes based on the CRSP value. Fourth, port, shipping line and clearing charges. Finally, NTSA registration and plates. Our full import guide explains each item.
FOB and CIF prices on export websites can look cheap. However, they do not include duty and clearing. Consequently, always compare landed prices, not website prices.
Paying for a car from Japan safely
Many buyers pay Japanese exporters by telegraphic transfer from Kenyan banks. That works when the exporter is genuine. However, fake websites copy real listings and disappear with deposits.
When you import with Elisa Motors, payment terms are agreed in writing first. Moreover, you see the car, its sheet and its inspection before the balance is due. That protects your money.
Self-import vs using an import agent
Some buyers order directly from large export portals such as SBT Japan or Be Forward. That can work. Still, you must then manage the port, KRA, clearing and registration yourself, often from Nairobi.
With an import agent like Elisa Motors, one team handles everything. In addition, we source from auctions, not just one exporter's stock. As a result, you get more choice and one fixed price.
Popular Japanese cars by budget
Under KES 1.5 million, look at the Toyota Vitz, Aqua and Nissan Note. Between KES 1.5 and 3 million, consider the Fielder, Vezel and X-Trail.
Above KES 3 million, the Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester and Toyota Harrier lead. For serious 4x4 work, the Prado is the benchmark. Browse more hybrid cars or SUVs.
Japan import timeline: from auction to your driveway
A typical Japan import with Elisa Motors follows a clear timeline. In week one, we agree your spec, then bid on matching cars. Auctions run every day, so most buyers win a car within one or two weeks.
Next, the car moves to the port for inspection and export. Then it sails to Mombasa in about four to six weeks. Finally, clearing and registration take about one week. In total, most Japan imports take six to nine weeks.
Importing commercial vehicles from Japan
Japan is also a top source for vans, minibuses and light trucks. The Toyota Hiace is the backbone of Kenyan tours, schools and shuttles. Similarly, the Isuzu Elf and Fuso Canter are popular for distribution businesses.
Commercial vehicles follow the same age and inspection rules. However, duty rates and registration steps can differ. Therefore, we confirm the exact costs before you bid. Browse all vans and light trucks we import.
What to check when your Japanese car arrives
When you collect your car, check a few things. First, match the chassis number with the logbook and import documents. Second, confirm the mileage matches the auction sheet. Third, test the air conditioning, windows and hybrid system if fitted.
Finally, keep every import document safe. You will need the export certificate, customs entry and logbook when you sell the car later. Then plan a first service within a few weeks. Change the oil, filters and, where needed, the CVT fluid. As a result, you start ownership on a clean slate. Many owners also fit a tracker for insurance.
Importing hybrid and electric cars from Japan
Japan is the world leader in hybrids. As a result, Kenyan buyers can choose from Aqua, Fielder Hybrid, Vezel Hybrid, Harrier Hybrid and many more. Hybrids cut fuel costs sharply in Nairobi traffic.
However, check the hybrid battery before buying. We review warning lights and, where possible, battery health data. Hybrid batteries usually last many years. Still, a tired one is expensive to replace.
Electric cars are a growing option too. For instance, the Nissan Leaf lands from KES 1.9M. Home charging works well for city driving. Meanwhile, the Nissan Note e-Power gives electric-style driving with a small petrol generator, so you never need to charge.
Browse every hybrid and electric car we import.
Getting a car from Mombasa to Nairobi safely
Once your car is cleared, it still needs to travel inland. Some owners drive it themselves along the Mombasa–Nairobi highway. However, a newly imported car may have old fluids and tyres that sat for weeks on a ship.
A covered car carrier is safer. It also keeps the mileage low and the paint free of stone chips. Therefore, we include carrier delivery to Nairobi and upcountry towns on request.
Common mistakes when importing from Japan
First, do not trust a website's FOB price alone. Duty and clearing can double the final cost. Second, avoid paying deposits to unverified sellers. Third, never ignore the auction sheet notes, even on a "grade 4" car.
Finally, watch the calendar. A car that misses the 8-year rule on arrival cannot be registered. Therefore, buy early in the year, or choose a younger car.
Japan vs UK vs South Africa
Japan wins on price, choice and mileage for Japanese brands. The UK wins for Range Rover, Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Meanwhile, South Africa is fastest for pickups and tough SUVs. Read our UK import guide or visit the South Africa page to compare.
